The School of Literature
About the school The School of Literature of Jinan University has a Department of the Chinese Language and Literature and a Department of History. There are three undergraduate programs in Chinese Language & Literature: External Chinese, and History, also two 2-year programs in Chinese Language & Literature, and Public Relations & Secretary. There are eight teaching and research sections: Chinese classic literature, literary criticism, Chinese, external literature, contemporary literature, writing, ancient history, modern and contemporary history, Confucius Academic Institute and the Poem Academic Institute. There are two postgraduate programs in Chinese classic literature, literature and art. The program of Chinese classic literature lists of key disciplines of Shandong Province. There are more then 1800 students. The School of Literature possesses 73 faculty members including 12 professors and 26 associate professors, among whom there are 30 PhD coaches and more then 85% are young. There is a powerful developing advantage. T he school has formed a teaching and research faculty which has a reasonable construction of age, education background and professional titles.Successively there are six teachers that acquired the College and University Teacher Prize of Zeng Xianzi Teaching Foundation, two teachers acquired the Prize of Shandong Outstanding Teacher, and one gained the Top Ten Outstanding Teachers title of Shandong Province University .
The school emphasizes the improvement of its academic research level, and forges a favorable studying atmosphere. The school’s reference room owns more than 20,000 books and over 300 kinds of journals, all of which offer advantages for domesticate qualified personnel and improve teachers’ teaching and research level. In recent years the teachers have issued over 1,200 academic articles, pressed 152 academic writings and more than 30 teaching materials, acquired 22 excellent social science achievements at or above provincial level and 11 excellent teaching fruits prizes, undertaking 12 research projects at provincial and ministerial levels. Now the school has presented its superiority and given shape to its distinctive features in the research fields of poetics, contemporary literature, China women’s literature, and the history of China society ideology and culture.
Academic Research
The School of Literature of University of Jinan presently has two institutes, Ci Xue institute and Confucianism institute, and 12 professors. The school is devoted to discipline expansion and the enhancement of academics, guided by the principle of “highlighting academic identity, promoting academic excellence, and striving for academic innovation,” and “enhancing characteristic construction, and promoting discipline development.”
The school now possesses the key discipline of Ancient Chinese Literature. This provincial discipline adds to an established family of disciplines in key research areas, including Library Art, Contemporary Literature, Special History, and others. So far, Ancient Chinese Literature has been focusing on four research fields, each having distinctive characteristics. These fields are pre-Qin culture and literature, song literature, folklore and folk literature, and modern literature. The research in these fields conducted at Ci Xue institute is studied extensively by other researchers around the world.
In recent years, the school has undertaken 12 provincial research projects, and eight projects above provincial level. Among those, several projects have produced great influence, such as Thoughts on Important Issues in the Research of Chinese Ci Xue (key project of “fifteen” social science academic plan of Shandong province, led by professor Cui Haizheng), Research on Confucian Poetics (funded social science project of Shandong province, led by professor Cai Xianjin), and Research on Social Genders of 20th Century Chinese Literary (key project of social science plan of Shandong province, led by professor Liu Chuanxia), among others.
