School of Chinese Language and Literature

School of Chinese and Literature is composed of Chinese Literature Department, Chinese Department and Science of Editing and Publishing Department as well as Chinese Education for middle school and Continuing Education for adults. It also establishes Lingnan Culture Research Centre (a key researching base at the provincial and ministerial level), Ancient Bibliography Research Institute, Linguistic Research Institute, Film and TV and drama Research Institute and Neotric literature research institute. The administrative mechanism consists of School Overall Office, Undergraduate Education Office, and Graduate Education Office. It publishes a magazine “Chinese Monthly?openly, and “Chinese learning guidance?.

Nowadays, a group of young, full-time teachers with academic background are working in the School of Literature, forming a reasonable structure of teaching. The school has a batch of experts and scholars who are famous home and abroad, having great academic influence in the academic circle.

The School of Literature embraces various kinds of books and materials. There are 1 reference room with 120,000 volumes of books; more than 1,000 periodicals from home and abroad, 3 microteaching room, 1 multimedia room and 1 audio-visual room.

With a long history of schooling, the specialty of Chinese language and literature exerts widespread social impact. Many well-known professors with seniority, such as Kang Baiqing, Li Jingci, Wu Sanli, Liao Biguang, Wu Jianqing, Liao Zidong, and Li Yudong have laid solid foundation for academic development of the school. This specialty won its earliest authorization to give title of professor in South China Normal University. Now it is a famous specialty in Guangdong, one of the key subjects supported by Department of Education of Guangdong province. Subjects such as Chinese ancient literature, ancient Chinese, writing are defined as key subjects at the provincial level.

At present, the School of Literature has 1 doctoral program: Ancient Chinese Literature; 7 master programs, which are as follows: Ancient Chinese Literature; Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature. Chinese language and characters, aesthetics, linguistics and applied linguistics, comparative literature and world literature, Chinese classic bibliography, besides, the school of literature has begun to enroll educational postgraduates for middle school Chinese teachers since the year of 1998.

The school of literature has made great efforts to promote the development. From Jan, 2001 to Dec,2004, it has published more than 60 academic books and textbooks, 637 academic dissertations, of which, 81 were published in “China Social Science? “Literature Critics? “Literature Research? “Chinese? “Dialect? “Literature Heritage? Moreover, 22 research results are appraised, including Chinese higher education prize for social science and Guangzhou province's regular project prize.

The current leaders of the school of literature are Prof.Ke Hanlin; dean of the School; Lei Yunkai, Secretary of general Party branch and vice-head: Prof.Chen Shaohua, Prof.Xie Piaoyun,Prof. Zhang Yujin.
