The Opening Ceremony for Class 2017 International Students Held
On November 30th, the Opening Ceremony for Class 2017 International Students was held in Panyu Campus. President Wang Xinhua attended the Opening Ceremony and delivered a speech. Other attendees included leaders of Dean’s Office, Students Affairs Office, Youth League, Resources Management Department and School of Basic Science and all the members of Class 2017 and the student representative of international students.
On behalf of Class 2017, SIVAPALAN DHINESAN, a freshman from France, gave a speech. DHINESAN pointed out that the coming six years would be an important journey for all Class 2017. He was grateful that GMU provided an invaluable opportunity for him to pursue his dream here. He was determined to work hard to realize his dream and become a doctor. SIMRAN SHAKYA, the student representative from Class 2015, shared her experience in GMU with all the freshmen. She encouraged them to blend in as soon as possible, to involve in all kinds of activities and try to make friends with fellow students and consult teachers when puzzled.

On behalf of the faculty, Associate Professor Long Jie extended a warm welcome to the new members of GMU family. She urged the students to tap all the facilities and resources to study. She believed that the teachers would be looking forward to teaching and interacting with the freshmen.
President Wang Xinhua expressed his warmest welcome to members of Class 2017 from all around the world. He briefly introduced the development of GMU in recent years. He was confident that the entire faculty would be committed to preparing and providing favorable conditions for international students to study and live in GMU. He wished their experience in GMU a fruitful, meaningful and memorable one in the coming six years. Then he offered two pieces of advice for them. Firstly, try best to learn Chinese language and explore the Chinese culture and serve as ambassadors of cultures to facilitate the communication and exchange between their home countries and China.Secondly, draw on the learning and research resources of GMU to master and improve professional skills.
In line with the internationalization development of GMU, the number of international students has been increasing steadily, and the structure has been optimized. GMU is now home to 190 international students from 19 countries including 180 undergraduates, 9 master students and 1 doctoral candidate, offering a full range of programs at undergraduate and graduate levels.
