School of Architecture and Urban PlanningThe School of Architecture and Urban Planning of Huazhong University of Science and Technology was founded by combination of the School of Architecture of the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology and the Architectural Planning Department of the former Wuhan Urban Construction Institute in May 2000. It sets up subordinate Architecture Department, Urban Planning Department, Environmental Arts Department, and the Office for the New Architecture Magazine, Research Institute of Architectural Design(Class A）, and Research Institute of Urban Planning and Design(Class A). Upon its establishment in 1982, the Architecture Department of former Huazhong University of Science and Technology (originally named Huazhong Institute of Technology) began to enroll both undergraduates and postgraduates in September. Professor Zhou Puyi from Tsinghua University was the first director of the department. And some famous architects like Mr. Huang Kangyu, Mr. Cai Dezhuang, and Mr. Zhang Lianggao together with professors Tong Heling and Huang Langu were also engaged in the establishment of the department, which helped it to obtain quite a high base point and abundant teaching experience at its inception. In 1992, the Architecture Department, Civil Engineering Department and Research Institute of Architectural Design of the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology were merged into the Architectural Engineering School. It was named Architecture School after its organizational restructuring in 1996, which had Yuan Peihuang a famous architectural design master of China as the dean, accommodating an Architecture Department and a Research Institute of Architectural Design. In 1986, Academic Degree Committee of the State Council formally authorized Huazhong University of Science and Technology to set up a master’s degree program of the sub-discipline, that is, Architecture Design and Theory. In May 1999, the Architecture Department of Huazhong University of Science and Technology passed the state evaluation of two classes --- the undergraduate education of the architecture discipline and the master’s program of architecture design and theory discipline in national colleges and universities. In May 2000, the School of Architecture in former Huazhong University of Science and Technology and the Architecture Department in former Wuhan Urban Construction Institute merged and formed the School of Architecture and Urban Planning. In the same year, the program of urban planning was assessed as “excellence” in the educational assessment on the undergraduate education of the urban planning and design program in national colleges and universities. Professor Yuan Peihuang, famous architect in China, was invited to hold the post of honorary dean. For seven years since its establishment, the school has witnessed a tremendous development in organizational restructuring, faculty reallocation and amendment of the education scheme and improvement of conditions, thus finally accomplished the recombination of programs and construction of related disciplines, and is stepping on a new road. It covers disciplines including architecture, planning, landscaping and environmental arts, and is authorized to grant bachelor, master and doctor degrees. Its exclusive teaching building covers 11000㎡.
