School of Distance and Continuing Education

Huazhong University of Science and Technology was approved by the Ministry of Education of China to launch a pilot modern distance education in July 2000. In the same year Cyber Educational College was set up, which was later merged with School of Continuing Education and Department of Continuing Education of Tongji Medical College into School of Distance and Continuing Education in July 2005. We persist that educating students is of top priority, innovation is the soul and practice comes along with responsibility. In order to "make more people enjoy the high-quality educational resources of our university" and to realize the goal of building a learning society and establishing lifelong learning systems, we, in accordance with the policy of "open school, standardized management, active exploration and scientific development ", make full use of the sufficient faculty resources, strong research abilities and advanced teaching conditions to promote the development of modern distance education actively. This enjoys a development which the scale, structure, quality, and effectiveness are coordinating harmoniously.

We invested over 40 million Yuan (about＄5.88 million) to build up first-class real-time and non real-time network-based teaching systems. The systems unify networks on the air, in the ground and network of people, while being utilized based on multimedia such as network, telecommunication, paper, and CD-ROMs. They are adapted to diversified and individual learning demands of various students extensively. Our university has set up over 100 learning centers countrywide, which holds over 40,000 registered students. As well, nearly 300 video-oriented courseware and nearly 100 online courses are running online. Via the Internet, satellite communication, multimedia and other modern information technology, we adopt the learning format with the combination of online and offline, the network teaching and courseware, electronic materials and text materials, classroom learning and independent study to help students access to the latest knowledge and information free from the time and space constraints. Additionally, different forms of continuing education such as correspondence courses and evening classes are provided for people throughout the country.

To foster our students’ information capabilities, communication skills, innovation and professional competitiveness, we, adhering to the principle of student-oriented, created a scientific service system of cultivating students, a student-supported service system, a career guidance service system, ideological education and psychological counseling systems and an emergency system. We insist that insuring quality, innovation and management makes us strong. We make efforts to create a domestic first-class brand of distance continuing education by integrating the educational resources of the original three units, forming new advantages and through continuous exploration and innovation.

We have centralized management of the educational training, and we are the only administrators of educational training to cooperate with others on behalf of HUST. In recent years, we put more efforts on the professionalization construction of educational training, explore customized corporate training market actively, and develop the government training programs vigorously. The newly established Department of Management and Engineering Technology Training and Department of Information Technology Training work together to create fine educational training projects which promote the training career of our college. We possess 17 training center, such as Training Center of Numerical Control Technology, and Training Center of Economic and Management, as well as a national training base for teachers and faculty and another training base under the Ministry of Education for network education practitioners. With the first-class teachers team and teaching quality, advanced educational training experience and management systems, we, integrating high-quality education resources in our university, are in charge of building various types of educational training platforms for cultivating practical-type talent with high quality, high level and high skill to the needs of society. Professional management is our concept.
