Department of Physical EducationThe Department of Physical Education of Huazhong University of Science and Technology is not only a functional department, which implements the “work regulations of School Physical Education", "National Students’ Health Standard" and the "National Fitness Program", but also a basic unit, which assumes the work of school physical education, students’ sports activities after class, organising sports competitions inside and outside school, etc. In addition, Department of Physical Education has won many honorary titles, such as “the advanced physical education School “(Ministry of Education), “the advanced units of national group “(the General Administration of Sport of China). There are 93 full time faculty members in our department, including 6 professors, 45 associate professors, 38 lecturers and 5 teaching assistants, among whom 18 members hold master degree, 2 members are studying for doctorate, and 7 members are national referees. Our department was entitled to grant the master degree on Physical Education and Training in 2005, and we began to enroll new students in 2007. Teachers of our department making innovations in scientific research, has brought out remarkable results. We have completed more than 30 national, local and industry-commissioned research projects, awarding research funding more than 80 million yuan(about＄11.76 million). This includes presiding over a “Five-Year Plan” of national education science, a scientific and technological project of Hubei Province, a project of social scientific fund of Hubei Province and a project of humanities and social science research of Hubei Provincial education department. And we also win many prizes, including a second prize of National Teaching Achievement, a second prize of scientific and technological progress of the Ministry of Education of China, four prizes of scientific paper report of National University Games, a prize of provincial teaching achievement and a national patent named "Drawing Management Software for Tennis Tournament”. We have published almost 10 monographs and textbooks, including a textbook for “National Eleventh Five-Year Plan”, and more than 100 academic papers in various key journals, including 12 papers in authoritative journals. With 215,385 ㎡playground area and 3.63㎡per capita area, we have 4 standard plastic rubber sites for track and field (the artificial turf soccer field inside), 59 outdoor basketball courts, 14 volleyball courts, 16 badminton courts indoor and outdoor, 31 tennis courts, a swimming pool, a synthetical Jaculation court and a gym. The indoor sports stadium area is 33,718㎡, and the per capita indoor area is 0.57㎡. The Indoor sports stadiums include the optical valley gymnasium, the west gymnasium, the Yunyuan gymnasium, the Tongji gymnasium and the west Gym. As one of the landmark buildings of “Wuhan • China Optical Valley ”, the optical valley gymnasium of our university is not only the state key investment project, but also one of the ten key projects fixed in the 10th Five-Year Plan of Wuhan, which offers an area of 22,770㎡ and 6,329 seats for students’ various activities. Besides, there are main stadium, squash court, billiard court, table tennis hall, dance court, gym, and free combat and taekwondo training courts.
