As one of the earliest schools of foreign languages that set up the discipline of business English in China, the School of Foreign Languages of Northeast Normal University stemmed from the Russian Section of the Chinese Department of Northeast University which was founded in 1948. It comprises five departments including the English Department, Russian Department, Business English Department, and the Department of College English for Non-English Majors. It also includes a teaching and research office for second foreign languages and 4 academic research centers. The school now has an enrollment of 1490 undergraduates, 610 master candidates and 84 Ph.D students. Conditions of education are being improved continuously, the School of Foreign Languages now boasts of 2 teaching buildings occupying a usable area of 19,000 square meters, 8 language laboratories, 5 computer rooms, 12 multi-media classrooms and 1 experimental center for network teaching.
The discipline of Business English (International Business Management) started as the discipline of E-commerce which was founded in 2001 with the aim of training specialized personnel with solid English foundation, broad global exposure, specialized knowledge and skills in international business, cross-cultural communicative competence and humanistic literary as well as expertise in more than one discipline so as to qualify them for roles in management, economy and trade, finance in the world arena.
