This is the first time that the SCO has organized a forum for international medical innovation and cooperation. Nearly 1,000 government officials, specialists, scholars and representatives of enterprises from 21 countries and organizations such as member states, observer states and dialogue partners of the SCO participated in the opening ceremony. With the themes of “Health, Cooperation, Innovation and Sharing”, the forum consisted of 5 sub-forums, namely, Public Safety and Emergency Rescue, Medical and Health Policy, Orthopedics, Chronic Disease Prevention and Treatment, and Intelligent Medicine. The team of the School of Ophthalmology & Optometry and Eye hospital led by Prof. Qu Jia has established the “China Model” of higher education of ophthalmology medicine and the first Eye hospital in China integrating diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases and correction of visual function, which made a major contribution to the development of the education and diagnosis and treatment model of ophthalmology medicine. At present, the Eye Hospital has built its own six–in-one integrated eye system of medical care, education, research, industrial translation, public welfare and mission advocating. There are many national and provincial research platforms, such as the National Clinical Medicine Research Center, National Key Laboratory, National Engineering and Technology Research Center, the Engineering Research Center for Myopia Prevention, Control and Treatment of the Ministry of Education, and the Optical Research Center of the National Health Commission. It ranks No.1 in scientific and technological output in 2018 Science and Technology Evaluation Matrics (the former China’s Most Influential Medical Institutions Ranking) in ophthalmology, and has held the highest position in 2018 Nature Index’s ranking among Chinese eye hospitals. The Hospital took the lead in establishing a nationwide alliance of ophthalmology and optometry. Nearly 2,000 institutions from 18 provinces, cities and autonomous regions have joined the alliance. The Hospital, committed to creating China's "Silicon Valley" in the field of eye health, has innovated and developed the model of “China Eye Valley - Wenzhou International Innovation Complex of Ophthalmology and Optometry”, which will play an important role in promoting industrial ecological construction, industrial upgrading and regional agglomeration of China's vision industry.

In recent years, WMU has given full play to our advantages of medical disciplines, actively participated in and promoted cooperation and exchanges with SCO member states, and carried out projects in medical professionals training, national health examination and scientific research projects. In the past three years, WMU has undertaken three batches of training courses for Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan and Georgia, and set up the Wenzhou Training Center of the SCO International Judicial Exchanges and Cooperation Training Base in 2018.
