College of Mechanical Engineering

With its earliest specialty being founded in the year 1935, College of Mechanical Engineering has witnessed 70 years development. In the year 1998 and 2001, this college was established on the basis of the amalgamation of some departments and research institutes, namely The First Department of Mechanical Engineering, The Second Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Mining Machinery, Testing Center, Institution of Automobile Engineering, Modern Design Method Institute, State Key Laboratory of Mechanical Transmission, and Electromechanics College of the ex-Chongqing Architecture University. Now it has become the biggest college in Chongqing University.

This college enjoys great popularity among students. The knowledge and skills they gained through top quality programs give them a competitive advantage in the job market.At present this college has 6 departments, 6 research institutes, 5 undergraduate programs, 12 master’s programs, 7 programs of master degree engineering, 3 primary disciplines for doctoral degrees,1 post-doctoral station, 1 national key discipline, 1 national engineering teaching base for the mechanical basic course as well as 1 provincial key laboratory. The total number of full time students has reached over 4600 including 2700 undergraduates, 1400 postgraduates working for master's degrees and 200 Ph.D. candidates. There are also nearly 300 students taking courses in degree and non-degree programs in adult education.

The college is rich of resources for teaching and research. It owns not only the famous erudite senior professors but also the relatively young vigorous academic research backbone. Among the 270 staff members in the college, there are 47 professors (including 31 doctoral supervisors) and 74 associated professors. 45, 45% of the staff under the age of 45 hold doctor degree. There are 2 middle-aged and young scholars nationally appraised for remarkable contributions, 1 National Discipline Evaluating Group Member, 2 specially appointed professors for the nation’s “Cheung Kong Scholars Program”, 7 scholars supported by the “Supporting Plan for New Century’s Outstanding Talents” of the Ministry of Education and 1 Bayu Scholar of Chonqing.

In the new century, this college is to take full advantage of the opportunities brought by the amalgamation, and will continue to give priority to education and research.
