College of Fine Arts

From its foundation to now, the School of Fine Arts in Southwest University has its name changed for several times: in 1950, it originally named Arts and Crafts Department of Southwest Normal University, with the main purpose of cultivating teachers in arts and crafts; in 1952, it was changed into Painting Department and also in 1952, it admitted five-year painting speciality; from 1957, it changed into single speciality, and renamed Painting Department; in 1963, it named Arts and Chinese Language Department; later changed into Fine Arts Department of Southwest Normal University; in October, 1994, it changed into School of Fine Arts in Southwest Normal University; in July, 2005, Southwest Normal University and Southwest Agriculture University were merged to form the new Southwest University, therefore, School of Fine Arts in Southwest Normal University changed its name into School of Fine Arts in Southwest University.

The School of Fine Arts in Southwest University has a history of over 50 years. It’s a period of development, advancement and resplendence. During the 50 years, the School of Fine Arts in Southwest University has built up a strong teaching staff, with 58 full-time teachers and 52 main teachers. Among 52 main teachers, there are 6 professors, 18 associate professors, 16 lecturers and 11 assistants. Moreover, the teaching staff has a reasonable structure: teachers with or beyond an assistant advanced title hit 41% among all teachers; teachers with or beyond a Master’s Degree reach 50%; and teachers with a degree of other college reach 31.5%. Our school bases on undergraduate education, and also throws itself into developing postgraduate education. Up to now, our school has founded 4 main departments, including Art Theory, Art Design, Painting and Sculpture. Every department receives four-year system undergraduates (B. A. Degree) and carries out a credit system. In addition, our school confers Master’s Degrees in Art Theory and Practice, Oil Painting, Chinese Painting (landscape painting, flower-bird painting), Mural Painting, Print Painting and Art Theory.

Starting from its foundation, our school has insisted on the guideline of “Attaching importance to personality, Advocating practice and creation”, constantly renovated the education concept, and improved teaching methods. Based on quality and characteristic, with the main task of training talents who have high moral awareness, good knowledge basis, strong practice ability and enough creativity, our school has cultivated nearly 15, 000 short 2- to 3- year higher education students, 4-year undergraduate students and postgraduate students to meet the needs of the development on economy, culture and art education.

The combination of two colleges provides chance and space for the further development of our school. Based on its own strength and potential, our school has set forth a sound plan for further development during the period of “11th Five-Year Plan”.
