College of Physics and Technology & College of Electronic Information Engineering

The School of Physics & Technology, School of Electronic & Information Engineering of Southwest University, were renamed from the former Physics School and School of Electronic & Information Engineering in June 2006. There are four undergraduate majors: Physics, Scientific Education, Electronic & Information Engineering, and Communication Engineering. Physics is the first-class discipline, including eight second-class subjects: Theoretical Physics, Particle and Nuclear Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Optics, Radio Physics, Plasma Physics, Acoustics, Atomic and Molecular Physics. The school is the qualified institution for Master degree awarding on the subjects of Physics and Engineering (Signal & Information Process major). Theoretical Physics and Condensed Matter Physics are the two key subjects of Chonqing. The Nonlinear Fiber Optics Laboratory is the key lab of universities in the city. The Teaching Center of Physical Experiments is the center for the demonstration of experimental education in all the colleges and universities of Chongqing City. The school includes Institution of Modern Physics, Institution of Optical and Electronic Technology, Institution of Signal and Information Process, and Research Center of Scientific Education.

There are more than one hundred faculties and staffs in the school, including more than 40 professors and associate professors, 3 Ph.D. student advisors, and more than 20 Master student advisors. More than 20 Ph.D. scientists came from domestic and international universities, 1 person with the title of “Excellent Talent in New Century”, 2 persons with the title of “Leader of Science and Technology of Chongqing City”, and 6 candidates. In the past five years, the school achieved 8 national research projects and funding support, 22 provincial and ministerial projects, 10 others as well. The school won 3 national and provincial prizes of “Science and Technology Advances” and “Excellent Teaching Achievements”. 9 patents were obtained and 6 projects passed the provincial and ministerial evaluation. 278 articles from the school were published on the domestic and international academic journals, in which 68 were collected by SCI, EI, and ISTP.

The school has good condition and support for teaching and research. And the journal of “Physics Teaching and Discussion”, the core journal of national fundamental education, is edited by school. In addition to the undergraduate and graduate students in physical science, the Master students of Education (Physics) and Engineering (Electronic and Information) major are also admitted. The school is responsible for the training of the mainstay teachers for discipline education (Ministry of Education), and the national or provincial training for the key teachers in middle school physics, the comprehensive practical activities. Over one hundred full-time graduate students of Master and Ph.D. degree, and more and more international students are studying in this school. About 1600 undergraduate students enroll, and will start their future career around the country. The employment rate of the students from this school tops in Southwest University every year.

The current secretary of the Party Committee is Mrs. Li Zhu-Ying, Mr. Chen Hong is the dean of the school. The leading board works as one and lead all the faculties and students to accelerate the development of the school. Significant accomplishments have been achieved in education, research, team formation, development of disciplines, party and political affairs, students’ works, as well as the conditions for school operation. The Party Committee won the honorary title of “Advanced Second-Class Party Organization” in 2006 rewarded by the committee of Higher Education Union.
