Economics CollegeThe predecessor of the School of Economics was the Department of Economics and Management. Its history can be traced back to the Teaching and Research Office of Economics and the Program of Economics of the Department of Politics as well as the Department of Economics, which were set up in 1952, and the “Institute of Minority Economies of the Central University for Nationalities" , which was set up in 1980 and was the first established research institution for minority economies in China. After more than 50 years’ development, the school has become a multi-dimensional and comprehensive education and research institution integrating educations of the undergraduates, masters, doctors and international students. It is a construction base for the “211 Project” -- a governmental plan to strengthen 100 key universities with priority in the 21st century and the “985 Project” --- a governmental plan to financially support 38 universities in China to become the world-class universities. The teaching and research institutions of the school include the Department of Economics, Department of Public Finance, Department of Finance, Department of International Economics and Trade, Institute of Ethnic Economies and Institute of Contemporary Chinese Economy. It also incorporates editorial departments of journals such as "Economic China", "Ethnic Economies" and "New Countryside". The undergraduate program includes the above mentioned four departments, namely the Department of Economics, Department of Public Finance, Department of Finance and Department of International Economics and Trade. The graduate program offers master degrees in 4 economic and law research areas: Political Economics, Regional Economics, Ethnic Economies and Economics of Population, Resources and Environment. It offers doctoral degrees and has postdoctoral station in the area of China’s Minority Economies . Sticking to the principle of “valuing teaching morality and ability, respecting meticulous scholarship, hard working and knowledge”, the school is pursuing the goal of building a high-level research-oriented institution. Headed by the famous economist Liu Yongji as the dean, the school has developed a faculty with meticulous scholarship and career-minded and enterprising spirit. Currently, the school faculty members have 14 professors, 14 associated professors and 27 doctors. Many teachers of the school have experiences of learning or doing research abroad. During the “10th five-year plan” from 2000 to 2005, the school was in charge of 28 research projects of national and provincial levels, publishing nearly 100 academic books and over 300 articles. With the principle of student-orientated education, the school has established a comparatively complete teaching and research system to ensure the students’ professional proficiency, broad scope of knowledge and competitiveness. The school has General Laboratory of Economics , Laboratory of Public Finance, Laboratory of Finance, Laboratory of International Economics and Trade, General Reference Room of Economics and 4 special libraries. It has set up more than 20 research and teaching practice bases in over 10 provinces and municipalities. These infrastructures have laid solid foundations for undergraduate education and graduate program studies of the school. Undergraduate program of the school requires a minimum of 4 years’ study, recruiting both science and arts students. Different majors of the school recruit students separately. Courses of the initial year deal with comprehensive knowledge. Students, with a limitation of 20%, can change majors according to their interests and talents after one year study in the school. Students are granted the degree of Bachelor of Economics after they have fulfilled credit hours required by the program and passed the CET 4 and thesis defense for graduation. Department of Economics (Program of Economics) Education objectives This program focuses on basic theories of economics. It aims to cultivate special and general economic talents that master basic theories of Marxist economics, have a good command of basic knowledge of modern economics and are good at using modern economic analytical methods. Graduates from the department are to be open-minded, innovative, have a wide scope of knowledge and strong adaptive ability, with the potential to work and study on other economic and management fields. Prospect of Employment and Further Study With a good command of professional knowledge, graduates of the Department of Economics are blessed with many choices in career and further studying. After 4 years’ study, graduates from the department have a strong ability in adapting to different jobs, being able to undertake such work as administration, management, analysis, forecasting, planning, teaching, researching and publishing in fields of industry, agriculture, business, finance, banking, education, press and publication, public service etc. Professional fields for their further study include Political Economics, Western Economics, Micro Economics, Macro Economics, International Economics, World Economics, Development Economics, Industrial Economics, Econometrics, Mathematical Economics, Regional Economics, Public Economics, Financial Economics etc. Other relevant fields that can be pursued for further study include Finance, Public Finance, International Economics and Trade, various programs of Management, Ethnology etc. Faculty and Program Features Talent cultivation is both the starting point and home of the department. It educates students on multi and extensive dimensions with the principle of emphasizing professional proficiency, broadness of knowledge and competitiveness. Teaching of basic professional knowledge is undertaken through compulsory courses such as Political Economics, Western Economics, Theory and Practice of Contemporary Chinese Economy, Industrial Organization Theory, History of Economics, Schools of Modern Western Economics, Finance, Public Finance, Accounting, International Economics, Econometrics, Statistics etc. Students’ further development in their professions and other relevant disciplines is facilitated by optional courses. The department has the longest history in the School of Economics. It has a highly qualified faculty with rich teaching experience and remarkable academic achievements. Its research in contemporary Chinese economic problems and attempt in establishing Chinese political economics is pioneering in the academic circle. At present, the School of Economics of the Central University for Nationalities has developed an integrated education system on economics, with three interactive layers of the undergraduate, master and doctoral programs. It provides a good environment for the department to achieve its objectives in education. Department of Public Finance (Program of Public Finance) Education Objectives This program focuses on both the theory and application of public finance. It aims to cultivate special talents that systematically master micro- and macro-economic theories as well as the operational principle and mechanism of modern economic policies, are familiar with fiscal and tax policies and laws under the circumstances of internationalization, have theoretical knowledge and professional skills of public finance and taxation as well as some research abilities. Graduates from the department will be able to undertake operational work in financial, taxation and other relevant economic sectors. Prospect of Employment and Further Study One feature of the program is its emphasis on both the theory and practice. The graduates are blessed with many career choices. They can undertake such professional work as tax management, tax planning & tax agency and financial management & consultation in institutions such as government sectors concerning public finance, taxation and other economic management as well as banking institutions, accounting agencies and other enterprises. They can also undertake teaching and research work. Having received education on general economics, the graduates have the basic knowledge and capacity required for further study on programs related to economics. With the knowledge of the theory and frontier development of the discipline, they can pursue further studies on such fields as finance, economics, taxation, accounting, financial management and international taxation. Faculty and Program Features Based on the general education, education objectives of the department are achieved by a combination of such teaching and practice activities as special compulsory courses and relevant experiment teaching and practices. Faculty of the program has a rational structure. Over 60% of the members are professors and associated professors with Doctor’s degrees. They are innovative and energetic. Main courses of the program include Western Economics, Political Economics, Econometrics, Public Finance, Financial Management, State Budget, Tax System of the People’s Republic of China, Taxation Management, International Taxation, State-Owned Assets Management, International Economics etc. Department of Finance (Program of Finance) Education Objectives The program is a comprehensive and emerging discipline integrating both theory and its application. It focuses on cultivating application-oriented interdisciplinary talents that master basic theories of modern economics and finance systematically, have knowledge of financial policies and regulations in the context of globalization, are familiar with modern financial analytical methods, and have certain capacity for practical and innovative work and certain enterprising spirit. Graduates from the department can undertake management, research and actual business work in such institutions as commercial banks, fund management companies, securities companies, insurance companies, foreign-related financial institutions and other economic management sectors and enterprises. Prospect of Employment and Further Study Graduates of the Department of Finance have a wide range of choices in career and further study. After 4 years’ study in the department, they not only can meet requirements for working in various financial institutions such as banks, insurance, securities, fund, trust, financial and futures companies, but also can undertake financial management work in other kinds of companies. They also can undertake management work in the Central Bank and various economic and financial management sectors of the government, such as bank supervision, securities regulatory and insurance regulatory institutions. With the basic knowledge of general economics, graduates from the department can pursue further study not only in fields of their own specialties, but also in relevant fields of theoretical economics and applied economics. Faculty and Program Features Teaching and research of the department is aimed to reach that of national and international first-class universities and research institutions. Trough bilingual and experiment teaching, our students are equipped with frontier theories and applicable methods of the discipline. Main courses of the department includes Political Economics, Western Economics, Financial Economics, Econometrics, Monetary Banking, Insurance, Financial Market, Commercial Bank Management, International Finance, Theory on Central Banking, Financial Engineering, Security Investment, the Theory and Practice of Investment Bank, Public Finance, Accounting, Statistics etc. The school incorporates a number of nationally and internationally influential specialists in economic and financial fields. Most teachers in the department have studied in China’s top education and research institutions and established close incorporative relations with relevant academic, financial and financial supervision institutions. Department of International Economics and Trade (Program of International Economics and Trade) Education Objectives This program is an application-oriented program emphasizing not only the basic knowledge of economics, but also the theory and operational application of trade. It mainly aims to cultivate high-level interdisciplinary special talents that master basic theories of economics, international economy and international trade, have the general knowledge, skill and application capacity of international trade, are familiar with rules and customs of international trade and policies and regulations of China’s foreign trade in the context of globalization, have a global vision and innovative thinking, and have a good command of analytical methods of modern economics and a foreign language. Graduates from the department will be able to undertake marketing, management, research, planning and propagating work in foreign-related economic and trade sectors, foreign invested enterprises and government institutions. Prospect of Employment and Further Study As a theory- and application-oriented program, the department emphasizes ability cultivation. Graduates from the department are blessed with many career choices. They can undertake suck work as import & export, marketing, management, research and planning in such institutions as foreign trade companies, foreign-related manufacturing enterprises, foreign-related economic and trade management sectors, banks, customhouses, taxation bureaus and commercial consultation agencies. The graduates with the general knowledge of economics have the basic capacity and theoretical attainment required by further studies in relevant programs of economics. Faculty and Program Features As a member of the School of Economics, which is a teaching and research base of the national “211 Project” and “985 Project”, the Department of International Economics and Trade has a faculty with over 60% are professors and associated professors and with Doctor’s Degree. Most of the teachers are from famous teaching and research institutions in China and abroad. Age and professional structures of the faculty are quite rational and complementary. The department also has a integrated teaching assistant and assurance system.
Based on the general education, objectives of the program are achieved through a system integrating special compulsory courses of international economics and trade, special optional courses, experiment teaching and on-the-spot practices. Main courses of the program includes Western Economics, International Economics, Econometrics, Accounting, Statistics, the Theory and Practice of International Trade, International Economic Cooperation, International Commercial Law, International Finance, International Settlement, English for International Trade, Communications in International Trade, International Business Negotiation etc. |
