College of Foreign LanguagesCollege of Foreign Languages was founded in 2003. The College comprises of 6 teaching units: English Department, Japanese Department, Korean Department, two College English departments (non-English majors), and one department of Graduate English (non-English majors). There are 113 administrative staffs, including 98 teachers and 15 administrating and teaching assistants. 5 of the 98 teachers are professors, 26 associate professors, and more than 50 lecturers. 10 are master instructor. One of the teachers is awarded the Excellent Teacher of Beijing, and 6 are young outstanding teachers listed in Beijing Teaching-Deepen with Talents Scheme. College of Foreign Languages offers English courses for non-English majors (undergraduates and postgraduates) as well as English majors in BJUT, and other foreign language courses offered are: Japanese, Korean, French, German, and Russian. The college offers master degree of Linguistics & Applied Linguistics, and bachelor degree of literature including four majors: English Translation, Business English, Business Japanese and Scientific and Technical Korean. The college emphasizes both development of language teaching and academic research. In order to teach more effectively and to fit for different requirements of students, new kinds of teaching methods are encouraged. The college has done many important research projects, such as one Experimental Project of College English Teaching Reform programmed by Ministry of Education, 16 research projects on Humanities and Social Science organized by the Education Committee of Beijing, 13 Beijing supporting research programs on Humanities, 6 Funding Projects for Academic Human Resources Development in Institutions of Higher Learning Under the Jurisdiction of Beijing Municipality (PHR), and more than 40 other kinds of researches projects, which improves the language teaching quality and the course development of the college. ◆ Number of Students: As of September 2009, there are nearly 370 undergraduate students and 30 postgraduate students. ◆ International Exchanges: The college always attaches great importance to international exchanges and co-operations, sending teachers to do researches and go further studies to universities in America, British, Japan, South Korea, Canada, France and Netherland. The college has exchange programs with more than 18 universities like Swansea University, The University of Maine, Medicine Hat College, Nantes College, Hogeshcool van Utrecht, Saga University, Kanazawa University, Niigata University of Management, Shinshu University, Kagawa University, Nagoya University, Inha University, Konkuk University, Ewha Womans University, Chungnam National University, Pukyong University,Keimyung University, Changyoung University. The College provides “3+1” education mode to select dozens of students from sophomore and junior students to study abroad for a year, where students could improve their language skills and experience foreign culture. Besides, short term international exchanges are provided for excellent students. ◆ English Department Major 1: Translation Students in this major are required to strengthen skills of English listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translating. They are educated to have English communication skills and interpretation skills. Core courses: Comprehensive English, Oral English, English Writing, English Listening, The Theory and Practice of English-Chinese and Chinese-English Translation, Consecutive Interpreting, Translation of Practical Texts, Cross Cultural Negotiation, American and British Literature and etc. Major 2: Business English Besides English communication skills, English courses of business theories and practice are provided. Students will have the chance to study business-related courses, with which they will become more competitive in the society. Core courses: Comprehensive English, Oral English, English Writing, English Listening, Management, Essentials of Economics, An Introduction of International Law, International Trade, Finance, Accounting, Marketing, Business Negotiation, International Business and etc. ◆ Japanese Department Nearly 40% of students in this major have the chances to take part in the international exchange programs. Besides, they have the opportunities to practice working as tourist guide to Japanese travelers in the Practice and Internship Base for College Students co-operated by Japanese Department and China International Travel Service. Students are educated to have excellent Japanese communication skills with business related knowledge so that they could work on international affairs, Japanese teaching, international trade, and etc. after graduation. Core courses: Comprehensive Japanese, Oral Japanese, Japanese Listening, Japanese Writing, Japanese Literature, Japanese-Chinese and Chinese-Japanese Translation, Japanese Culture, Japanese Economy, Business Japanese Writing, International Trade, Accounting, Human Resource Management, International Marketing, Finance and etc. ◆ Korean Department There are many Language Practice and Internship Bases for students in this major, many of which are Korean enterprises. Over 80% of the sophomores have the opportunities to study in South Korea for a year, and short term exchanges are also provided in summer or winter vacations. Students are taught to possess high standard of Korean communication skills with scientific and technical knowledge. Core courses: Comprehensive Korean, Oral Korean, Korean Literature, Korean Writing, The Theory and Practice of Korean-Chinese and Chinese-Korean Translation, Korean Interpretation, Introduction of Machinery, Introduction of Automobile and etc. ◆ Master Degree Program The college has one master degree program: Linguistics & Applied Linguistics with three research areas: Language Teaching Pedagogy Studies, Literature and Culture, and Business English. The period of schooling is two and a half year.
