School of Science

The School of Science was founded in August 1998, which consists of Department of Mathematics, Department of Physics (including the National Base of Physics Curriculum Teaching for Engineering Undergraduate), Department of Chemistry, Institute of Optoelectronic Technology, College of Life Sciences and Bioengineering, Institute of Laser. In department of mathematics, physics and chemistry, each has an undergraduate program, the majors are information and computational sciences, optical information science and technology and material chemistry respectively. School of Science has a reputation for attracting the best and brightest students from around the country. Nowadays there are 1,600 students in the School of Science. Since 2006, a special class, “Si Yuan” class was organized in the school. Student in “Si Yuan” class take their first year study in School of Science, in the second year, they will choose their major according to their interest among all the programs in the university.

Graduate study is another important part of education. The School of Science currently has an optical engineering doctoral program in the level 1 discipline, three doctoral programs ofOptics, Operations Research and Control Theory, System Theory in the level 2 disciplines, three master’s degree programs of Mathematics, Physics, Optical Engineering in the level 1 disciplines, and 14 master’s degree programs in the level 2 disciplines.

School of Science get researching funding from the country every year, including National High Technology Research & Development Program of China (863 Program), the Major State Basic Research Development Program of China (973 Program), National Natural Science Fund, National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars of China etc. School of Science is the best school in the university in term of number of paper published. In the past five years, about 400 papers are published each year.

School of Science is active in international exchange and cooperation. In 2008, an agreement between the School of Science and the University of Waterloo was signed. According to the agreement, undergraduate in the department of physics and chemistry has the possibility to study in UW. Except of the exchange of students, every year there are teachers elected to work in universities all around the world.
