Students servicesLibrary Services BUPT Library was founded in 1955. The current library building area amounts to 13,000 square meters, founded in 1986. The collection held by the central stack amounts to more than 1,000,000 items. The library possesses most books of posts and telecommunication and electronics specialty. In the way of telecommunications, the collected books are complete and famous, making it the first in China . Currently the library collection has reached to 1,100,000 items, including 3,000 kinds of journals. Except printed-books, the library also holds many E-document databases, including 17 kinds of databases, such as IEL、EI village、ITU、 INSPEC、Wanfang、Chinese technology magazine and Chinese Academic magazine. Students are required to show their library cards at the entrance for security reasons. For any problems in the library, please contact with the staffs. The loan period for books is one month but half a month for the books of literature and art (I 、 J style). Loan renewal is available either in person at the library or through the library's website. The books should be sent back before the deadline, or students will deserve relevant punishment. To apply for a library card, students need to bring their student ID and a passport-size photo to the library. Processing fee and deposit will be charge for the library card. If your library card is lost, please report the loss immediately to the library with your ID Students can return their library cards by the time of graduation and receive the deposit by the right of Leaving the University Form.
Security Services Beijing is a relatively safe city and life on BUPT campus is particularly safe. Nevertheless, here are a few recommendations to ensure your safety: It is advisable to take extra precaution with your passport and money. Normally, one should not carry their passport and large sums of cash on their person. Your student ID should be sufficient both on campus and anywhere in Beijing for identification. If you leave expensive items in your room, make sure to lock the door, shut off all the lights and faucet and close the windows. Follow all traffic rules and be particularly cautions on the road. In the case of emergency, promptly call the police and similarly report to the International Affair Office of BUPT, where the staff can be of assistance. Living Resources There is a variety of cafeterias on campus, such as Students 、 Xuyuan 、 Qianxi 、 Xinxi 、 Yijia cafeteria, which provide various food. You may also dine at local restaurants around the campus. Outside of the North Gate, there are Restaurants such as Huixianlin 、 Boshiju and AomaTea and outside of the South Gate, there are Tiandu 、 Xiangyuan 、 Jinbaiwan restaurant, etc. Basically all daily necessities can be bought on the campus at Xueyuan Market. You may also buy them at Super Market around the campus. Outside of the North Gate, there are Wumei and Meilianmei Market and outside of the South Gate , there are Hualian and Jinwuxing Market. BUPT also boasts a wide range of resources on campus for its students: hospital, post office, bank, bookstore, laundry mat, photoshop, sports facilities.
Mailing Services There is a post office on campus at 1 floor of Hongtong building close to the western gate. Around the post office there is a business hall of China Mobile where you can get telecommunication services.
Internet Services Every international student dormitory room has an internet connection. Therefore, if you bring a computer, you can conveniently go online in your own bedroom. You can also access the internet at the library, or off-campus internet cafes. BUPT sends many announcements over the internet, many of which are important and some of which you may need to simply browse over. If you desire to use internet services in foreign student apartment.1 and 2, you must go to “Internet Properties (TCP/IP Properties)” and select “Obtain an IP address automatically” and “Obtain a DNS server address automatically” and then you will be able to access Chinese websites.
Currency Exchange& Other Banking Services Ren Min Bi (RMB) is the only university accepted currency in the People's Republic of China . The main unit of RMB is the yuan (jiao=0.1; fen=0.01). RMB is printed in the following forms: 100yuan, 50yuan, 10yuan, 5yuan, 2yuan, 1yuan, 5jiao, 2jiao, 1jiao, 5fen, 2fen, and 1fen and coined in 1yuan, 5jiao, 1jiao, 5fen, 2fen, 1fen. The following currencies may be easily exchanged into RMB: English pound, Hong Kong dollar, U.S. dollar, euro, Japanese yen, Canadian dollar, Australian dollar, etc. There are 7 kinds of credit cards that may be used at select places: American Express Master Card VISA Card JCB Card Million Card Federal Card There is a Post Office on campus and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China branch outside of the South Gate and China Construction Bank branch outside of the North Gate. Currency exchange and savings account services are available at these locations. Opening a new account requires presenting one's passport or residence permit. Transportation The public transportation system in Beijing is fairly convenient and reliable. For the high development of Beijing , the bus route and name-board always change, which you should pay attention. Make sure to hold the armrests on public bus or buckle your seatbelt in taxi, especially on the freeway. Take extra precautions with your cards and money. For specifics on the path of each bus route, you can go to the Beijing Public Transportation website: http://www.bjbus.com/. Taxis are convenient and available 24 hours a day. Rates reflect the distance to your destination. Taxis are generally between 1.60-2.00 yuan per kilometer (there is a sticker on the window of the back seat doors with the specific price for each taxi). The fee is added to a flat rate of 10yuan at the start of every ride (higher rate late at night). Taxis mark lighting “TAXI” above the car and “FOR HIRE” on the windshield. The license should be displayed above the glove compartment with the driver's name and photo from which you can make sure the taxi driver is licensed or not. You will receive a receipt at the end of your ride. It is wise to hold on to that receipt in case something comes up and you need to get in touch with the driver or the taxi company. Beijing subway includes circle ways, one ways and City Light Rail. The locations can be found on a map of Beijing . The closest subway station is “Xizhimen” 、 “Jishuitan” and “Dazhongsi”. Bicycles are the best way to get around for most Beijing citizens. Students studying at BUPT will probably find that second-hand bikes are both cheap and relatively reliable. Motorcycles are not allowed on campus.
Holidays International students enjoy the same school holidays as Chinese students. The university does not schedule recess for foreign holidays. The academic calendar lists all school holidays. The International Affair Office will supply detailed information on holiday schedules about upcoming holidays. Also the website for BUPT supplies relative information. Extracurricular Activities International Affair Office organizes extracurricular activities for international students to participate in during their free time. These activities include culture and entertainment, such as tourist visits. Individual department also holds its own activities and international students are welcome to participate in. Please pay special attention to the announcement of these activities and do you best to attend. The university facilities are open to international students. Some facilities require a usage fee. Don't let athletics interfere with studies or others health. Students are expected to treat the equipment and facilities with respect. International students are welcome to join university students group, such as athletic teams, dance troupe, chorus, etc.
Student Organization International students have representation in the BUPT Student Association and the Graduate Student Council and are welcomed as active participants of both councils. BUPT has over 20 student groups. These groups are allowed to recruit members at the beginning of each school year in September. There are activity bulletin boards outside of the Student Activity center and student dormitories that post upcoming student activities. Students can participate whatever they like. After the university approves an international students' application, the student may participate in the activities of the fellowship group. Students must abide by Chinese law as well as university regulations and administration.
Travel in China International students may take advantage of their free time to travel. International students must have the proper visa or temporary residence permit to travel within the areas. Without special authorization or for research needs, students may not travel to the areas restricted to foreigners. You will also need to obtain a letter of recommendation from your department of study to process this special authorization. Those who transgress these regulations will be punished accordingly. Students are only permitted to travel during weekends, holidays, and winter and summer vacations.
