For nearly seven decades, Donghua University has led its alumni to strive tirelessly for success. 

1951 was the year when China's first textile higher education institution was established. East China Textile Engineering Institute was established by the merger of the textile department of Jiaotong University, the private Shanghai Textile Institute of Technology and the textile department of Shanghai Technical College. In 1985, it was renamed as China Textile University. And finally, it was renamed as Donghua University in 1999.

A major milestone was the 'high-speed spinning process' in the early 1980s. This led to a major increase in chemical fiber output in China. It was the end of cloth shortages, and it made proper clothing available to many people. In addition, the process helped the revitalizing of the economy.

Donghua University is directly under the administration of the Ministryof Education, and a national 'Project 211' and a national 'First-Class' university. 

The present-day Donghua University develops constantly. It has gradually established a high-quality and innovative faculty. It includes academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, top scientists of national key projects, academic leaders with international influence, and young academic talents.
