1. Cultivation Aim
To meet the needs for rapid development and achievement people make in the field of iron metallurgy, this specialty aims to train senior versatile personnel competent in steel making and metal processing
2. Duration of the Program
2.1 The program for regular full-time doctoral candidates lasts three years.
2.2 For those who take a continuous master-doctoral program, the total duration of study range from four and half years to five years.
2.3 Part-time candidates who have a job while pursuing a doctoral degree can extend their study to four and half to five years.

5. Research and Dissertation
5.1. Proposal
5.1.1 The candidate should obtain 16 credits as required before preparing the dissertation research.
5.1.2 The proposal must be completed within the first academic year for full-time doctoral candidates, or within 2 years for consecutive master-doctoral candidates and the part-time doctoral candidates who are holding a job. 
5.1.3 The research topic should be in a forward position of the scientific field, or come from major technological problems arising in the national economy. The kickoff report, with no less than 8000 words, should contains a review of the literature, significance of the topic, problems to be studied, key points and special features, possible innovations, schedule and expected results. The number of cited references must not be less than 50.
5.1.4 Assessment on the proposal is made by a group of 7 senior teachers including at least 4 professors before the candidate can proceed with the research. The proposal presentation must be given openly
5.2 Mid-term Report
In the middle of the research, the candidate should review, and provide a report on, his/her work carried out according to the plan in order to make sure that the research goes properly. A warning is given if major discrepancy from the plan is found.
5.3 Preliminary Defense
Upon the completion of the dissertation, a preliminary defense session will be organized and attended by 3 professors (including the supervisor) three months before the formal defense can he held. Only the preliminary defense is passed, can the candidate proceed to defend his/her dissertation. In case the candidate fails in the preliminary defense, he/she will be given three to six months to make modifications on his/her dissertation. The candidate must obtain his/her supervisor's consent before he/she can re-submit his/her work.
5.4 Formal Defense
The dissertation will be sent to 11 to 15 experts in related fields for a correspondence review after it is accepted by the examiners in the preliminary defense and meets the requirements as specified in "The Quantification Index on Research Achievements of Shanghai University for Master's and Doctoral Candidates." With no less than 8 experts approving the dissertation, and after necessary modifications based on the referees' comments, a defense session will be organized. In case the defense fails, the matter will be sent to the Graduate Administration of the University for assessment, and appropriate measures will be taken according to the regulations.
5.5 The dissertation will be subjected to an anonymous review process in accordance with "Regulations Concerning Anonymous Reviewing of Sampled Degree Theses or Dissertations".
5.6 The candidate should have published no less than 3 papers related to his/her research topic.
5.7 Neither the supervisor nor the members of the supervisory panel shall be held responsible for the consequence occurring to the doctoral candidate.
