The College of Horticulture at QAU was first set up in 1958. Now it has 41 faculty members among whom there are 10 professors, 19 associate professors, 11 lecturers and lab assistants. Among the teaching and research members there are 10 doctors, 6 postdoctorals, 5 returning from abroad, 3 middle-aged and young leading figures of the provincial disciplines, 17 master's advisors.
The college has undergraduate and training courses. According to the rules of major-setting issued by National Education Ministry, horticulture is the first-class subject. The department has it subordinated by three second-class subjects: fruit trees, vegetables and ornamental gardening. The department has been entitled to confer master degree on the subject of fruit trees. There are 6 research group on fruit tree cultivation, vegetable cultivation, conservatory plants cultivation, plants breeding, gardening production keeping and merchandising and ornamental gardening. There are laboratories for research on plants growth regulation, plants hereditary breeding, biological technique, plants roots with bacteria and production keeping and quality analyzing. The department also has a service center for popularizing gardening high tech and an experimental station. Among the many labs in the department, the ones of Molecular Biology and Developmental Biology are very famous college-ranked labs. In resent years, the department has presided over 50 national, provincial and ministerial scientific research projects and has achieved over 20 awards of different ranks.
