School of Electronic and Information EngineeringSchool of Electronic and Information Engineering (EIE), founded in 1952, is developed out of some related colleges of twelve universities in middle and southern China, including Sun Yat-sen University, Lingnan University, etc. In 1956, most of the teachers and students were transferred to Telecommunications Engineering Institute in Chengdu (now University of Electronic Science and Technology). In 1958, the school was reconstructed by Prof. Feng Bingquan, the well-known educator and electronics expert. In January 2002, the school was composed of the Radio department, the Radio and Automation institute and Electronic teaching laboratory. They form what the school is today. With the efforts of the scholars of several generations, the school has laid a solid academic foundation and formed a high level faculty. There are 94 teachers, including 22 professors (20 doctoral tutors), and 32 associate professors. Among them, 60 teachers have the doctoral degree. At present, the school has the only national key discipline of Communication and Information System in south China, 2 doctoral degree programs in two level I disciplines of Information and Communication Engineering, Electronic Science and Technology. The school also offers doctoral degree programs in six level II disciplines and master degree programs in eight fields. There are 4 undergraduate programs: Information Engineering (Communications Engineering and Electrical Engineering), Electronic Science and Technology (Physical Electronics), Integrated Circuit Design and Systems Integration, E-science and Technology (Micro-electronic Technology). Among them, Integrated Circuit Design and Systems Integration is a national secondary characteristic specialty, and the other three are brand specialties of Guangdong Province. At present, students' enrollment includes 1977 undergraduate students, 629 master's degree candidates and 128 doctoral candidates. The school enjoys advantageous conditions in scientific research and teaching. With a total investment of 30 million yuan, a new-generation laboratory of mobile communication has been set up for Guangdong Telecom and South China University of Technology. There are also a number of teaching and research bases, such as Guangdong Electrical and Electronic Experimental and Teaching Center with an investment of 13 million yuan; Guangzhou Integrated Circuit Design and Training center with more than 44 million yuan investment which is an industrialization base for IC design in Guangdong as well as one of the first national IC personnel training base. The school also cooperates with some well-known international IT enterprises to build laboratories and develop research projects, which serve as bases of students' out-of-school practice. In personnel training, the school always attaches importance to the development of students' basic theory and professional skills, and their overall quality, in particular, the ability to innovate. The school carries our joint school-running programs with many well-known colleges and universities at home and abroad, and also invites famous experts and scholars to visit as well as give lectures. At the same time, our school has set up a joint class for talents of different majors in the university to create a three-year training model to training talents. For many years our graduates, with an employment rate of 100%, are in short supply. A large number of graduates from the school are now professional experts, advanced workers, administrative cadres and entrepreneurs in electronic and information industry, such as Li Dongsheng, the general manager of TCL Group, Huo Dongling, chief executive of Comba Group, Huang Hongsheng, former chief executive of Skyworth Group, Chen Weirong, the former general manager of Konka Group, and so on. |
