Architecture and Environment

The College of Architecture and Environment forms essential part of present Sichuan University (SCU) in the new discipline as an opportunity to integrate into the new entity-based Institute. The college origins can be traced back to 1988， which is the predecessor of the Ministry of Education approved the former Urban construction and Environmental protection Institute.
 
The college has a unified department covering and wherever possible integrating, most branches of Engineering. It is thriving and active in many fields of teaching and research. The Faculty comprises four multidisciplinary departments which are Department of Architecture, Department of Civil Engineering, Engineering Science and Mechanics Department and the Environmental Science and Engineering. Its teaching and research at Solid mechanics, Geotechnical engineering and Biomedical engineering are the three National Key Disciplines currently recognized as important and receiving support by the central government of the Peoples Republic of China. Mechanics, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science and engineering, architectural design and theory, Architectural technology Science are the five provincial key disciplines of science within the faculty.
 
Research in the college has a broad focus of sustainability through environmental engineering, civil engineering and biomedical engineering. Biomechanical engineering, environmental engineering are the Provincial Key Laboratories; there are number of specialist research units such as Sichuan Province Water Treatment Engineering Research Center, provincial level civil engineering undergraduate professional training centre.
 
The college has authorized doctoral degrees in four first-class disciplines at mechanical, environmental science and engineering, civil engineering, biomedical engineering. It also has four post-doctoral mobile stations of mechanical, environmental, biomedical engineering, civil engineering; eleven doctoral degree programs in mechanics biomedical engineering, environmental science, environmental safety engineering, resources and environment, structural engineering, and human habitation environment; sixteen authorized master degrees in biomedical engineering, engineering mechanics, architectural design and theory, urban planning and design, construction techniques of science, structural engineering, municipal engineering, environmental science, environmental engineering, water and soil conservation and desertification control etc. It provides advanced postgraduates study and research in civil engineering, architecture and environmental engineering; Multidisciplinary departments offers unified undergraduate degrees in architecture, urban planning, civil engineering, water supply and drainage engineering, engineering mechanics, environmental science, environmental engineering, landscape architectural design, biomedical engineering etc;
 
Advanced Research and teaching facility also includes the unprecedented FGD (Flue Gas Desulfurization) State Engineering Research Center, the Ministry of Education authorized western resources and environment online research center, Sichuan Province mechanics experimental Teaching Demonstration Center. The college forms a unique teaching and research system

There are 184 academic and teaching staff, including one academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 3 Special Fellow, 10 academic and technology leaders in Sichuan Province, 16 tutors of doctoral students, 35 Professors, 58 associate professors and senior engineers. Among the permanent professors, it also includes more than 30 internationally well-known scholars as visiting professors in the college, where some of them are the academicians of the United States National Academy of Sciences.
 
Currently there are 2233 Undergraduates, 498 Graduates, 73 Doctoral students, 8 post-doctoral station staff. Over last two decades, approximately 1200 PhDs and Master Graduates, 5000 Undergraduate and 4,000 Diploma students graduated from the faculty, majority has become the industry leader and the essential working force of various organizations and institutions.

In recent years, the college actively works with broad range of world reputable Universities in various international exchange programs. With the efforts, together with the University of California and China Jiuzhaigou environmental Authority to form "United States and China Jiuzhaigou ecological environment and sustainable development international joint laboratories". Work together with Clausthal University of Technology (Germany) set up "China and Germany Energy Research Center ", with Japan's Hitachi set up " Research Center of Applied Technology environment "; Regarding to the course structure, the college introduced University of Aachen, Germany " Dual Master's degree in environmental engineering core modules " ; the creative talents Undergraduate exchange program together with the University of Washington (US); The 2+2 Undergraduate programs with the Germany Clausthal University of Technology, Malaysia Limkokwing University of Creative, Australia University of Curtin. The entire class of 32 students successfully graduated as first approved Germany 2+2 Undergraduate program students; at present, the college is carrying out substantial cooperation in scientific research with the University of California (United States), Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Germany and Asia Sum Industrial University, the University of Pittsburgh, University of Montreal (Canada), Singapore Nan yang Technological University, Paris-East. University (France), University of Sheffield (UK), Japan Tokushima University, and （TUV）Rhine in Germany etc.
 
Recently, the faculty committed major national projects including "973", "863" and more than 100 of the major province level research projects. It has been awarded the National Natural Science Award, National Invention Award; more than ten of the Province level award, six national invention patents, more than forty publications of teaching materials, published articles and papers more than 1,200, including published in SCI, EI, ISTP three leading international searching articles more than 200. 2004-2008 calendar years total 60 million Yuan for scientific research.
