School of Biological and Chemical Engineering
The School of Biological and Chemical Engineering is one of the first schools of discipline established at Zhejiang University of Science and Technology. Presently, it has over 1300 full-time undergraduate students. There are five departments and nine research institutes.
The school has one provincial key discipline-applied chemistry, and a key discipline at university level-food science.
The school now has 12 professors and 30 doctors and on-the-job doctors. 10 teachers have overseas education experience in Germany, Australia, Japan, Korea, Austria, etc. 20 teachers are from a technical background as senior chief engineers and engineers in enterprise. 20 guest professors come from well-known domestic and foreign universities and enterprises.
The School of Biological and Chemical Engineering is membership of the Chemical Academic Society of Zhejiang Province, and the Food Academic Society of Zhejiang Province and the director unit of the Food Industrial Association of Zhejiang Province and the Food Additive Industrial Association of Zhejiang Province. It is the location of the assistant director of the Biochemical Specialized Committee of the Chemical Academic Society of Zhejiang Province and the Technical Expert Committee of the Food Additive Industrial Association of Zhejiang Province. It is also a member of the expert team for the Significant Technical Attack Project of Zhejiang Province Specializing in the Intensive Processing of Agricultural Products and a member of the expert team for the Meat Product Industrial Association of Zhejiang Province.

Laboratories
The laboratory center at the school of Biological and Chemical Engineering is composed of the Laboratory of Foundation Chemistry, the Analysis and Testing Laboratory, the Laboratory of Chemical Engineering, the Laboratory of Food Engineering, the Laboratory of Biological Engineering, the Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Engineering, the Laboratory of Materials Science and Engineering, the Laboratory of Biochemical Engineering and Technology which receives the primary subsidization for the province finance as well as the Chemical Laboratory of Foundation Chemistry. There are more than 20 laboratories, such as the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry, the Laboratory of Inorganic Chemistry, the Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry, the Laboratory of Chemical Principles, the Laboratory of Biochemistry, the Laboratory of Food Technology, the Laboratory of Chemical Technology, the Laboratory of Biological Separation Engineering, the Laboratory of Microbiology, and the Laboratory of Biological Technology. The total area of the laboratories is 3000 m2. The laboratories are equipped with highly effective equipment, including: liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, ultraviolet spectrophotometer, infrared spectrum, fluorescence spectrum, atomic absorption, amino acid analyzer and some other massive instruments. The total cost of the instruments is over RMB 8,000,000.
Scientific Research
(1)Activities of Scientific Research
The teachers in the School of Biological and Chemical Engineering have well-developed skills doing scientific research. They have taken on many teaching and research projects at the national, provincial and departmental level and have undertaken many interdisciplinary scientific research projects. Many teaching and scientific projects have been awarded prizes at the provincial and departmental level and the interdisciplinary scientific research projects have made great progress. In the last three years, their faculty have undertaken 50 projects, including the transforming fund project at the National Technical Department, the key scientific project for the National Ministry of Education, the key state-level project of Star-Fire Plan, the significant science and technology attack project for Zhejiang province, the special project for the Governor Fund, the significant competitive bidding project in Hangzhou, the key science and technology project for Zhejiang province, the natural sciences fund project for Zhejiang province, and the developmental project for cooperative industrial production. The annual expenditure of scientific research reaches 5,000,000 yuan. In recent years, the published works and the compiled textbooks have amounted to three. Over 10 projects have passed appraisal at the provincial and departmental level. More than 10 projects were awarded the following prizes: the second and the third prize of Science and Technology Advancement in Zhejiang Province, the second prize for Teaching Achievements in Zhejiang Province, the first prize for Scientific Reseach Achievements of Universities in Zhejiang Province, the second prize of Science and Technology Advancement in Hangzhou. Altogether, there have been more than 200 scientific research essays published in the last three years, among which more than 50 can be retrieved from the international authorized index system SCI, EI, ISTP.
