About DPU

Dalian Polytechnic University (Dalian Institute of Light Industry), which developed from Shenyang Institute of Light Industry, was the only institution of higher education in Northeast China specializing in light industry and textile. Founded in 1958, Shenyang Institute of Light Industry had five undergraduate specialities: Textile, Printing and Dyeing, Artificial Fabric, Chemical Engineering and Brewing. During the Cultural Revolution, 65 universities and colleges were cancelled and Shenyang Institute of Light Industry was one of the twenty-five universities and colleges that were kept for its characteristics and talents cultivated for the society. The institute first moved to Kuan Dian of Liaoning Province, then to Dalian. It was renamed Dalian Institute of Light Industry in 1970. Since 1978 it has been under the administration of National Ministry of Light Industry and Liaoning Province giving priority given to National Ministry of Light Industry. Since 1998 the managing system turned to be the co-construction by national and local government, while giving priority given to Liaoning People’s Government. It was renamed Dalian Polytechnic University on March 16, 2007.
 
Through the construction of 52 years, the scale of our university has been enlarged and our capacity has been improving. Our university has developed greatly during the twenty years after the reform and open of China and it has become the training base and research and development center of the consumption industry in northeast region. Following the principles of course-orientation, quality, innovation and characteristics”, our university has developed into a multiple-discipline university combined with engineering, science, arts, management and economics, centering on engineering and specializing in light industry, textile and art.
 
There are altogether 4 campus areas in our university, which covers an area of 1036 mu with 465,000 m2 for constructive area. The main campus area covers 754 mu and its constructive area is 312,000 m2. The area for teaching and administration is 225,000 m2. The area for the students’ dorm is 128,000 m2. The library covers an area of 27,000 m2 and it has 592,000 volumes of books. By the end of 2006, the total value of teaching and research equipments has reached 89,590,000 yuan. There are 23 comprehensive laboratories (including Jingong experiment base). The total area for laboratories is 56,000 m2. 30,000,000 yuan was invested on the construction of the campus network to realize the mutual connection of the library’s local area network and campus area network.
 
To date, the current number of enrolled students is approximately 20,000 and more than 100 foreign students are studying at the university.
 
In recent three years, the initial employment rates have remained over 92%. Our university was awarded “the Excellent Unit of Employment Evaluation of Liaoning General Universities” in 2004, “the Excellent Unit of Graduates Employment Evaluation of Liaoning General Universities” in 2005 and “the Outstanding Contribution Award of Graduates Employment Evaluation of Liaoning General Universities” of the first group in 2006.
 
Now our university has 15 secondary schools: School of Chemical Engineering and Material, School of Biology Engineering, School of Foodstuff , School of Textile Engineering, School of Mechanical Engineering and Automation, School of Information Science and Engineering, School of Art and Design, School of Fashion, School of Management and Social Science, School of Foreign Languages, School of International Education, School of Edinburgh International Civil Avation, School of Vocation and Technology, School of Adult Education and School of Art & Information Engineering; three teaching departments: Physical Education Department, Modern Education Technology Center and Ideological and Political Theory Teaching and Research Department.
 
At present there are 38 undergraduate specialities. Light-chemistry engineering, food science and engineering, art design and product design are 4 specialities are under the national control directly. Fashion design and engineering is the speciality of provincial demonstration. Biological engineering, light-chemistry engineering, textile engineering, art design, fashion design, material science engineering, food science and engineering and other specialities have become the influential advantageous specialities in their own industries and northeastern region.
 
Our university has 3 provincial main specialities, 28 master’s bases, granting authority of master’s degree of 6 engineering fields.The university has become a Doctor authorization construction university.
 
Our university has 28 master’s bases: fermentation engineering, biological chemical technology, foodstuff science, agricultural products manufacturing and storing engineering, textile engineering, pulping and papermaking, mechanics design and theory, material science, material manufacturing engineering, chemical technology, environmental engineering, design and art, fashion design and engineering, textile material and textile products design, textile chemistry and textile products design, sugar making engineering, leather chemistry and engineering, food oil and vegetable protein engineering, sea products manufacturing and storing engineering, art, microbiology, mechanics manufacturing and automation, pattern recognition and intelligence system, material physics and chemistry, chemical process mechanics, applied chemistry, environmental science and enterprise management.
 
There are 6 fields having the authority to grant engineering master degree granting authority: light industry technology and engineering, foodstuff engineering, mechanics engineering, biology engineering, material engineering and textile engineering.
 
There are 867 professional teachers in our university, among whom 119 are professors, 266 are associate professors, 1 academician of double-professor of Chinese Academy of Science, 2 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 4 members of the speciality teaching guidance committee of the universities of the country, 1 excellent expert of Liaoning Province, 2 experts having outstanding contribution of the country, 4 excellent experts of Dalian City, 27 enjoying national government’s special allowance, 6 enjoying Dalian government’s special allowance, 5 in the hundred level and 6 in the thousand level of the hundred-thousand-ten thousand talents project of Liaoning province, 1 youth subject pioneer of the universities of Liaoning Province, 10 excellent youth main teachers of the province, 119 tutors of doctors and masters.
 
In December 2005 our university received excellent result passed the assessment of Undergraduate Teaching Level Held by Ministry of Education and achieved excellent result. It was the first university that achieved excellent result among the seven undergraduate universities directly under the ex-Ministry of Light Industry.
 
During the recent three years, our university has undertaken national 973 project, national 863 project, 42 items of national natural science foundation items. 2,287 academic dissertations have been published, among which 229 are included in the three major three search catalogs. 109 items of patent rights have been applied for. The annual scientific outlay was 30,000,000. 32 items have been given the scientific and technological awards above province and ministry level. In 2003, professor Jin Fengxie led the project of Ginsenoside Rh2 in Enzyme Conversion and was awarded the second prize of national technological invention, whose first prize had been vacant for six years and the second prize was only given to 19 items in that year. In 2005 professor Zhu Peiwei led the project of the Technology and Application of Sea Cucumber Autolytic Enzyme and was awarded the second prize of national technology invention. One of the applied outcomes of this project is that sea cucumber capsule has become the brand product of Dalian city and created billions of production value. What’s more, our university has been nominated 3 items of second prize.
 
Our university has two main laboratories of the province: fermentation and pulping and papermaking, three province-level centers: Liaoning seafood deep-processing engineering technology research center, Liaoning foodstuff engineering technology research center, Liaoning textile products detection center; two city-level R&D centers.
 
Our university has formed its own characteristics and advantages in the field of fermentation engineering, foodstuff and engineering, textile engineering, pulping and papermaking engineering and natural activator transformation and separation technology, the transformation and comprehensive deep-processing technology of natural fabric, agricultural (sea) products deep-processing technology, green chemistry and environment protection technology, papermaking machinery and auxiliary technology, textile and fashion CAD technology, city view and environment design, product and art design.
 
The inter-university exchange and cooperation has been greatly developed with more than 30 universities and enterprises in over 20 countries and regions such as the US, the UK, France, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Korea,etc. Effective exchanging and cooperation have been made in the field of undergraduate and postgraduate education, teachers’ training, scientific research, industry development and other fields. Doctor Kurt Wüthrich, the Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry and Jacques Mouclier, chairman of French Fashion Association and other well-known scholars in the world have been invited as the reputation and visiting professors of our university. In November 2005, our university successfully opened the co-cultivation program of overseas students with French EPITECH University, which added a new page to Sino-French higher education exchanging history.
