About SMUAcademicDisciplines SMU owns 5 state-level key academic disciplines and another 6 ones approved by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine; its clinical medicine as an academic discipline has been ranked as the top 1% of the worldwide universities by ESI. SMU now has 99 master¡ˉs programs, 10 primary disciplines with 75 doctoral programs authorized to confer doctor¡ˉs degree, and 7 post-doctoral mobile research centers. SMU is ranked at the first place in Guangdong Province and the second among the mainland medical universities in terms of the number of academic disciplines authorized for conferring the doctoral degree. To date, SMU has built its complete multidisciplinary system with medicine as the hub and science, engineering, law, management, literature and linguistics and pedagogy, the supports.
Faculty SMU has a devoted faculty of 4,325 members, 1,701 of them specializing in teaching and research. Among the teachers and researchers, 445 are professors and 595 associate professors, 487 mentors of M. D. programs and 821 mentors of M. M. programs
InternationalExchanges SMU has close links with 38 educational and medical research institutions from 19 countries (regions), including the U.S., Europe and Japan. Annually, the international academic exchanges by the staff members register more than 400 person-times and overseas experts and scholars are invited to host more than 70 lectures and forums in SMU. Over the past 5 years, 400-odd students went abroad for further academic studies. The university has undertaken 68 short-term training courses for over 1,600 medical experts and health officials from 198 countries. The joint doctoral program for science on health management between ISCTE-IUL Business School in Portugal and SMU has been approved and included by the Ministry of Education. Totally, the university has co-established 3 laboratories and institutes with foreign prestigious universities or scientific institutes and consequently gained 40 internationally cooperative programs, making a breakthrough from zero both in the international cooperation in key state-funded projects and in Guangdong Province introduction of scientific innovation team.
TalentCultivation SMU is the one of the 13 medical university authorized by the Ministry of Education to run the pilot 8-year medical education program. It became one of the first universities authorized to run “Excellent Clinical Doctors Education” by the ministry in 2013. Currently, the university has 17 affiliated schools, offering 29 undergraduate specialties, with a teacher-to-student ratio of 15:23. The university has been undertaking 57 national high quality projects for talent cultivation. To date, SMU has 19,540 active full-time students, including 14,375 undergraduates, 1,263 doctoral degree candidates, 2,992 master’s degree candidates and 910 international students and a total number of 26,621 students for continuing education programs. or the recent consecutive two years, the university has been ranked the top in terms of the number of National Teaching Achievement Award. Right now, SMU is the National Continuing Education Base for Medical Professionals and one of the four National Entry Examination Bases for Cardiologic Specialty, the first Guangdong provincial Examination and Examiner’s Training Base for Clinical Skills. In recent years, SMU is ranked the first in terms of the number of the National and Provincial Excellent Doctoral Dissertations. Her undergraduates have won the first-class prize for their scientific works in the “Challenge Cup” National College Student Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition and the gold prize for “Challenge Cup” National College Students Entrepreneurship Competition for the recent 7 years consecutively.
SocialResponsibilities With a full backing of excellent professionals who can cope with various nuclear, chemically or biologically related emergency cases, SMU never hesitates to serve for the people and the society at first aid whenever or wherever catastrophe or emergency occurs. During the SARS outbreak, The university undertook the first autopsy of SARS deceased .Doctors and nurses from our affiliated hospitals joined the battle of combating SARS both in Guangzhou and Beijing.During the Wenchuan earthquake disaster, the medical rescue team dispatched by SMU was the first medical team arriving at earthquake-stricken areas and was the backbone force of Guangdong Medical Rescue Team.
