International Education at Beihang University
International education at Beihang University (BUAA) was inaugurated in the early 1990s' and has continued to develop at a very fast pace. By the end of 2010 over 1000 international students were enrolled in programs at BUAA. Among them over 600 international students were studying for their doctoral, master, or bachelor degrees, and 400 were studying the Chinese language in the Chinese Training Center.
BUAA is one of the most famous universities in China, and is equipped with advanced laboratories and teaching facilities. Out of its 130 professional laboratories –35 are listed as state or ministry key laboratories. Doctoral programs are available in 49 fields, masters programs in 144 fields, and bachelor programs in 48 subjects.
BUAA is one of the few universities in China which uses English as its primary language of instruction for all international master and doctoral programs, as well as some of its bachelor programs. It has done this since the early 1990s. Since 1993, more than 4,000 students from over 50 countries have been enrolled in BUAA, including more than 500 doctoral and master candidates. Over 300 have been awarded master or doctoral degrees.
The campus of BUAA is located in the west of Beijing, close to the thriving boutiques and cafes of Wudaokou, and the bright lights and big names of the capital's own Silicon Valley: Zhongguancun BUAA’s campus is known for its beautiful environment, tree-lined streets, and delightful Green Park, whose lake is filled with Lotus flowers in summer. Convenient transportation links, an international student dormitory, and excellent sporting facilities including gymnasiums, and an indoor swimming pool make BUAA’s campus a great place to be. . There are also banks, a post office, dining halls, supermarkets and many other services for the complete convenience of the academic and daily lives of international students.
BUAA is qualified to admit all categories of international students, including those sponsored by the Chinese Government Scholarship. The Education Ministry of China has designated BUAA as one of the top 20 universities in China able to implement the Postgraduates Program ,a full scholarship sponsored by Chinese Government. The Beihang Scholarship for international students was established in 2007 to encourage and support the coming of excellent international students to BUAA. Since that time hundreds of distinguished international students have been awarded the scholarship. International students who have successfully completed a bachelor program at BUAA are also eligible to study for a master’s degree here. These students are frequently recommended for the Beihang Scholarship. BUAA also actively carries out its student exchange program with famous European and Asian universities and accepts dozens of students annually from various countries.
To cater to the development of International education in BUAA, the International School was established in 2004. The International School consists of the Chinese Language Training Center (CLTC), the Office of Foreign Students’ Affairs, the Educational Administration Office, and the Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organization Education and Training Center (APSCO ETC).
The International School is responsible for developing educational programs and extracurricular activities for international students. It is in charge of applications, entry examinations, admissions, registration, and the study and daily life of international students. The International School not only offers the master’s, doctoral and bachelor degree programs, but also provides long and short Chinese training programs, professional training courses, a summer school, and many other specialized programs to meet the increasing demands of international education.
The Chinese Language Training Center (CLTC) was established in 1994 and is noted for its excellent and experienced teaching staff, as well as its access to modern multimedia teaching facilities. The training programs in CLTC focus on practical Chinese: improving learners’ listening comprehension, speaking ability, and reading and writing proficiency.
The Asia-Pacific Space Education Center (APSEC), sponsored by China's National Space Administration and the Secretariat of Asia-Pacific Multilateral Cooperation in Space Technology and Applications, is the educational institute of the Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organization (APSCO). It provides intensive master’s programs and also runs short training programs in remote sensing and geo-information system, satellite communications, satellite meteorology and global climate ,space and atmospheric, and space project management.
The International School of BUAA is committed to providing only the highest quality in education, and prides itself on offering a meticulous academic environment for international students. To that end, the university attaches great importance to cultivating its ability to conduct research, and has thoroughly implemented its credits system and stipulated strict management regulations in education. BUAA regularly organizes academic seminars and forums in various fields which help to create a vigorous academic atmosphere for the educational exchange between international and Chinese students. Lectures given by visiting professors from many different countries further contribute to the rich academic life students can expect here.
In balance with its academic offerings, the International School of BUAA is well known for providing international students a large range of extracurricular activities, from sports clubs to photographic exhibitions. Other popular activities include introductions to Chinese culture, such as music, calligraphy and painting. Every semester the International School organizes trips for international students to visit scenic areas and some of the many famous historic and cultural sites in and around the city of Beijing.
