Geography and Climate

Jiamusi is a prefecture-level city in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang. Situated on the boarder of Heilongjiang Province, with Harbin to the west, Shuangyashan to the east, Jiamusi is located on the lower reaches of the Songhua River, neighboring the Sanjiang (Three Rivers) Plain created by the Songhua, Heilongjiang and Wusuli rivers. Its terrain is low, with mountains beginning in the north, south and western areas of the city. Jiamusi's plains, located in its northeastern area, are quite flat and low. Jiamusi covers 32,700 square kilometers with a population of 2,450,000.

Jiamusi has a continental monsoon climate .Its annual average temperature is 3 degrees centigrade (37.4 degree Fahrenheit). The temperature climbs gradually leading up to the summer months, and gradually decrease s after. Temperatures climb to the peak in July. It has a lot of sunshine and plenty of rainfall in summer, with a lot of wind in spring and autumn, and is snowy and cold in winter.

Economy

Jiamusi is an important rnational trade grain center. Jiamusi is rich in rice wheat soybean corn tobacco, flax and so on. Jiamusi is an old industrial base. There are many different kinds of industries in Jiamusi including mahinery, paper, pharmeceutical, food and textiles. At the end of 2005, there are 212 scaled enterprises. In 2007 Jiamusi had a GDP of RMB 34.1 billion with a 14.3% growth rate.Jiamusi is also the gate for the trade between the mainland and Northeast Asia. What’s more, Jiamusi has a good and convenient transportation system. Jiamusi has opened to Beijing, Harbin, Russia etc. via domestic and international air routes. The large airport is under construction now. There are 4 main railway lines in Jiamusi, linking the city with Harbin, Mudanjiang, Hegang, and Fujin. Because of its rich resources and complete transportation system, Jiamusi has attracted many investors.

Culture

In the old time, Jiamusi was once inhabited by the Sushen ethnic group, ancestors of the present Manchu group. There's no exact record of the origin of Jiamusi. It wasn't until the Twentieth Century that Jiamusi became the active town that it is now. There are now 5 districts, 4 counties and 2 county-level cities as the administrative divisions in Jiamusi.
There are many different ethnic groups in JiamusiIn addition to the Han, Mongol, and Hui ethnic groups, a population of Korean, Manchu and Hezhen ethnic minorities also reside in Jiamusi. Each minority ethnic group has its own dialect. And culture.And Jiamusi dialect is the official language of the north east. The Jiamusi dialect has very special features due to Jiamusi's history and geographical position, but it is easily understood by Mandarin speaking people.

Tourism

Jiamusi has a lot of tourist resources, among which the major attractions are Chenxing island, which consists of 10 large and small islands; Children Park, whose original name is Xinglin lake Park, and rebuilt as Children Park on Jun 1st, 1990; Sifengshan scenic spot etc.

There are four famous ethnic townships in Jiamusi, two Korean (Xinghuo and Tangwang townships) and two for Hezhen (Jiejinkou and Bacha townships). Hezhen is known for its fishing culture throughout Northern China. The area's cuisine features many seafood dishes, and specialized clothing and ornaments are made of fish skin and bones. Jiejinkou is a compact community of the Hezhen people, located along the river in the Sino-Russia border. Here visitors learn the unique customs of the Hezhen indigenous group. So when you travel to Jiamusi you can experience a lot of different cultures.

If that is not enough, you can also experience the fishing life of the Wusuli River in Jiamusi. Wusu is a small but rich town on the river. It is the largest fishing ground for salmon, and is seated along the easternmost end of China. The sun's rays strike Wusu first in China. Autumn is the catching season for dog salmon along the Wusuli River. So if you want to taste the delicious salmon ,come in autumn.

Additionally, there is Honghe Nature Reserve which is a wetland habitat of swans, wild geese and red-crowned cranes. Bird watching is best throughout the summer months.

Another attraction is Fuyuan Port, located where the Heilongjiang and Wusuli Rivers converge. This is the only release for the waterways of Jiamusi City and Heilongjiang Province, and allows the water to run into the sea. The port faces Russia (across the river). Further downstream one will find the Russian cities of Komsomolsk and Nikolayev.

Education

Jiamusi government also gives high priority to education. Jiamusi University has 139 teaching and administrative staffs, among those there are 20 professors, 66 associate professors, 26 graduate tutors, 16 teachers having doctor's degree, 2 nationwide excellent teachers and 2 excellent teachers of Hei Longjiang province. The college has complete experimental teaching system. It owns a large-scale comprehensive experimental center. The total area of laboratory is 5636m2, and the total value of equipments is more than 17 million. There are 28 sets Large-sized apparatuses. Since the college’s establishment, it has fostered more than 5300 graduate students, undergraduate, and now the college has more than 2000 undergraduates.
