At the very beginning, this day is celebrated by the singles, mostly young people, known as the Singles' Day, or Guanggun Jie. The date, 11.11, is chosen because the number "1" resembles an individual that is alone. Later, it is used by the giant e-commerce firm Alibaba’s main portal- Taobao. Since then November 11 became fixed day for large-scale promotional activities for Taobao. The "double eleven" has become an annual event in China's e-commerce industry and has gradually affected the international e-commerce industry.
